This gun was built under a license purchased from the French designer Canet in 1891. It went into production in 1892 at the OSZ and Perm' factories in Russia. Between 1891 and 1921 OSZ made 551 guns and Perm' made an additional 248 guns. These guns were used as anti-torpedo boat weapons on almost every Russian ship built between 1892 and 1910.

In the fall of 1914 a new AA mounting was developed for this weapon with a maximum elevation of +50 degrees. 80 mounts were built of which 40 were sent to the Baltic fleet, 19 to the Black Sea fleet plus a further 12 used as coastal defense weapons. In 1916 a new mounting was developed which increased the elevation to +70 degrees, with four of these guns being completed. In the 1920s a new design increased the elevation still further to +75 degrees. This last mounting remained in production until the end of 1920s. These weapons were continually improved during their service life and in 1941 there were still 69 guns in active service in the Soviet Navy.

Some of these weapons were captured by the Japanese during the Russo-Japanese war. The Japanese then produced their own projectiles for them.

Constructed of barrel, fastened by casing and an extra ring. The breech was a simple piston-type.

Actual bore diameter was 7.5 cm (2.95"), not 7.62 cm (3.0").
