* Sunk or lost. Of the nearly 7,000 Japanese troops in the convoy, only about 800 reached Lae and 2,427 were returned to Rabaul. The official death toll was 3,664. CAP losses reached 15-20 planes. Allied losses totaled thirteen men killed, twelve wounded, and three P-38s and one B-17 shot down (plus two planes destroyed in crash landings).
