A. General
For all operations on the water Command was in the Hand of the SKL, Naval High Command. The SKL splitted the command authority into two areas:
BALTICS (Baltics up to Skagerrak Mine fields) to Naval Group Command East (Marinegruppenkommando Ost) under the lead of Admiral Rolf Carls.
NORTHSEA including Norway to the Naval Group Command West under the lead of Generaladmiral Alfred Saalwächter.

Aside from these Warship-Groups, also Schoolship SCHLESIEN was involved. She served as the backup-force for the Minesweeper working the south of the Belt, after this she assisted SCHLESWIG-HOLSTEIN, which ran aground.
In addtion, in order to secure the supply
routes, minefields were set up and later prolonged in the Skagerrak. This
