H.M.S. Duke of Kent

Scale: 1:96. A full hull design model of the Duke of Kent, a proposed 170 gun four-decker ship of the line circa 1809 which was never built. The hull is painted a copper colour below the waterline surmounted by a narrow white line. There are a total of four gun decks, the port lids of which are depicted in their open position with the guns rolled out. White bands along the hull denote the positions of the gun decks with black and red bands between them. The ship has three masts and a bowsprit and the standing and running rigging is complete. A Union flag is flying from the bowsprit. There is a three-tier gallery at the stern and the windows and decoration have been finely painted. The depicted ship is flush decked and deck fittings include a stove pipe, an open waste area, gratings, and the double ships wheel. The name: 'The Duke of Kent' is inscribed on the stern. The model is displayed on a mahogany baseboard mounted on three chocks and supported by six turned pillar supports. A plaque is inscribed: 'HMS "DUKE OF KENT FULL RIGGED GUNS 170 PROPOSED BY JOSEPH TUCKER, ESQ SURVEYOR OF THE NAVY. PRESENTED TO GREENWICH HOSPITAL BY MRS J, TUCKER WIDOW OF THE DESIGNER IN 1852'.
