Eight months later, on 1 April 1922, the call went out for the design of an arresting gear to be used upon USS Lexington (CV 2) and USS Saratoga (CV 3). The Navy specifications stated the “arresting gear will consist of two or more transverse wires stretched across the fore and aft wires… [and which] lead around sheaves placed outboard to hydraulic brakes. The plane after engaging the traverse wire is guided down the deck by the fore and aft wires and is brought to rest by the action of the traverse wire working with the hydraulic brakes.”

拦阻装置包含两道或更多道横跨纵向(fore and after)钢索的横向钢索……飞机接触纵向钢索之后减速,并被纵向钢索引导直至停止。
换言之拦阻装置是一组纵向钢索加上两到三道我们现代意义上看到的“拦阻索”
纵向钢索限制飞机着舰过程中的横向位移,使飞机保持(retain)降落航线。
retaining wire的用词很精确,至于说是甲板两侧防止飞机翻下去的网,反而是误译了。这东西就在甲板上只不过是在另一种意义上“拦阻”用的。
