Until 1817, the Third Rate encompassed those Ships of the Line with more than 60 but not more than 80 guns. They comprised distinct classes, in 1714 consisting of those of 80 guns (three-deckers, carrying a main battery of 32pdrs on their lower deck) and those of 70 guns (all two-decked ships, with a main battery of 24pdrs); the latter included four ships of 66 guns. From mid-century the upgrading of the 70-gun ship resulted in the classic 74-gun ship (most significantly, with its main battery increased to 32pdrs), while the parallel upgrading of the 60-gun Fourth Rate to the 64-gun ship produced a smaller Third Rate with a primary battery of 24pdr guns.
