Development
The 76 mm M78 Anti-Ship Projectile (ASP) was developed and qualified between 1976 and 1978 by Raufoss Technology A/S (now Nammo Raufoss AS), using programmes co-ordinated by the Royal Norwegian Navy. Production was carried out between 1981 and 1984. The projectile has the same interior and exterior ballistics as other rounds fired by the US 3 in/50-calibre cartridge for the 3 in/50 Mk 27 naval gun. This gun has now mainly been withdrawn from Norwegian service and further production is unlikely. Some of the naval gun mountings were used in coastal defence roles after been withdrawn from warships.
The main requirements of the 76 mm M78 ASP were these:
penetration of steel plates used for ships' hulls a delay feature to permit functioning after target penetration optimum destructive effect to be delivered approximately 2 to 4 m inside the target terminal effects including blast, fragments and an incendiary element.
Description
The 76 mm M78 ASP is part of a fixed round, with the projectile rigidly secured to the Mk 7 necked brass cartridge case by 360º crimping rings.
The ASP M78 projectile has a forged alloy steel body filled with 350 g of Composition A-3. Threaded into the neck of the body is a penetrator cap containing the rear fuze assembly which includes the delay element, the safety/arming mechanism and a booster. A Point-Detonating (PD) front fuze is mounted at the tip of a streamlined windshield which covers the front of the penetrator.
As the front fuze strikes a target, it functions to initiate a pyrotechnic train to the rear fuze, in which a 5 ms delay is introduced before the main charge detonates.
The Mk 7 brass cartridge case contains 1.8 kg of M6 propellant. Priming is electrical. The muzzle velocity is 823 m/s, and the maximum range 12,930 m.
The front fuze will function on striking 1.25 mm steel plates set at an angle of 0º. The projectile will penetrate 20 mm armour steel plates set at an angle of 45º and function after penetration.
Armament
76 mm '3 in/50' naval and coastal-defence guns.
