本案最后采用的是美国约克城级的方案,价格优惠。(下面的原案存档)
在一战之前,智利向大英帝国购买了两艘超无畏舰即“拉托雷海军上将”号、“科克伦海军上将”号,战争爆发后,两舰被皇家海军接收。“拉托雷海军上将”号改名“加拿大”号参加作战。而进度慢的“科克伦海军上将”号则被搁置,后英国海军打算将其改装为航母,这就是历史上本该出现的22600吨的“鹰”号。
大战结束后,南太平洋联盟接替智利成为两舰的权益相关方,两舰就成为南联盟和英国之间需要解决的问题。英国方面本来打算将两舰交还南太平洋联盟。但X总统认为两舰无法适应十年甚至二十年后的战争,提出改建方案。按照这一方案落实了“拉托雷海军上将”号的改建(1919-1929年间由英国提供技术指导,在智利瓦尔帕莱索完成改建)。但是对于正在改建为航母的鹰号,智利方面和英国方面均有很大顾虑,智利一度希望将该舰改回战列舰。英国曾考虑这么做,但又打算将该舰作为航母完成以便尽快验证诸如右舷舰岛等航母技术。拖延之下,该舰遂成为悬案。此后英国决定单独兴建一艘试验航母,并中止鹰号的建造,智利方面对此表示谅解,但保持了日后索取补偿的权利,英方表示日后可以根据英国的22000吨舰队航母为智利重建一艘航母。1929年,南联盟的工业化已经初具规模,而同时航母技术已经相对成熟,英国又计划大力建设舰队航母。南联盟再度和英国谈判解决“鹰”号问题。
南联盟决策层对于新航母的建设提出了两种计划。一种是建造一种护航航母和舰队航母之间的简化的轻型航母,载机30架以上,好处在于费用低廉,适于中小国家。一种是建造一种标准排水量25000吨以上、类似于后来的ESSEX的大型舰队航母,载机110架以上。但最后还是决定遵照列强的普遍标准,委托英国建造22000吨级的航母,但采用自己的方案。
此后英国和南联盟有针对造价进行了商谈,估计船价为628万英镑,而当初“科克伦”号的价款仅为250万英镑,且未完全付清,经过包括汇率变动、货币贬值等等复杂的计算,最后决定以250万英镑成交,可以用橡胶、钨矿、石油等战略物资折抵。
“科克伦海军上将”号航空母舰设计方案是标准排水量和鹰号相同22600吨。
飞行甲板长260米,宽32米。吃水7.6米。
各层甲板装甲厚度总计100mm,侧舷装甲60mm,防鱼雷装甲隔壁60mm。
航速34节。20节时航程7700海里。
采用ESSEX级类似尺度的开放式机库,载机72架。
8门127mm单管炮,12门76mm单管高射炮(其余小炮暂时省略)。
上述为大致方案,主要说明南联盟的海军发展动向。(本案得到在欧洲旅行疗养的Xsuny的大力指导并绘图,当然责任本人自负)草图仅为示意,也并不表示完全相符
