The US Navy did not adpot the British idea of barrage anti-aircraft fire by LA guns, but it did become interested in using rapid-fire cruiser guns for aimed anti-aircraft fire. Initial attempts to control the cruisers' 6in/47 batteries by using spots to correct the outputs of the MK 37 ( i.e., to deal with the different ballistics of the 6in gun) were only partly successful. In 1945, BuOrd was working on this problem, using the MK 37 director coupled to an auxiliary range receiver. It developed an Ordalt (2283) which made it possible to place the 6in/47 under MK 37 control using the existing MK 1 computer. The range receivers were altered, and a computer solution developed to produce fuse orders and predict lead angles. The method was tested very successfully at sea on board Atlanta (CL 104). At least some Cleveland class cruisers were modified soon after the war. |
